Who are the Rohingya People?

The Rohingya people are a Muslim majority ethnic group, that are indigenous to Western Myanmar (Burma) in an area known as Rakhine State. Before their persecution in 2017, an estimated 1.4 million Rohingya lived in Myanmar.

The Persecution of Rohingya People

After the 2017 persecution of the Rohingya people by the Myanmar military, over 730,000 fled to Bangladesh and many more to other neighbouring countries. But many remained in the Rakhine State and are living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.

Where are the Rohingya people from?

The Rakhine State also known as Arakan is located in western Myanmar, sharing borders with Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.

Those who remained are living in IDP camps inside Myanmar and continue to face persecution

As recently as August 2024, the Buddhist Armies (Junta and Arakan Army) killed around 500 Rohingya people, including women and children.
